Darvocet Abuse Side Effects

Darvocet is the trade name for a synthetic narcotic containing propoxyphene and acetaminophen and is used to treat mild pain, opiate withdrawal and restless leg syndrome. It’s also used as a muscle relaxant and is known to increase the amount of serotonin in the body. Acetaminophen acts as an anti-inflammatory which boosts the pain relieving effects of propoxyphene. Darvocet abuse causes significant psychological, physical, and behavioral side effects that are hard to overcome.

There are various psychological and behavioral side effects of Darvocet abuse that affect the user’s social life. First, a person who is going through Darvocet abuse experiences an interference with role fulfillment regarding school, family, home and work. They are also likely to try out risky activities regardless of the consequences, such as driving while drunk thus posing danger to themselves and others.

Persons abusing Darvocet may also experience various social problems related to financial difficulties that emanates from the addiction. Vomiting and nausea depend on the dose and these signs indicate that, the patient is abusing Darvocet by taking a larger dose than required to relieve pain. According to studies one of the ways that the body uses to prevent itself from toxicity and chemical overdose is prompting the chemoreceptor zone of the abdomen which acts as a sampling pool for opiate toxicity to produce a vomiting reflex.

Another Darvocet abuse side effect is the interference of vestibular apparatus by the drug. Vestibular apparatus maintain balance and regulate coordination in the body and lack of it gives in to nausea. Constipation as a side effect depends on the amount of Darvocet taken and is a common feature of opiates. Recent studies have shown that opioid receptors found in the gastrointestinal tracts of people who abuse Darvocet, cause the intestinal contractions to slow down, leading to high fluid absorption, which in turn cause stool to dry and harden.

Patients, who abuse Darvocet or take the prescription longer than indicated by a physician, may get sleep disorders such as insomnia. Darvocet being an opiate, produce histamine which causes the constant itching. Also, Darvocet is a central nervous system depressant and therefore causes sedation. Also, opiates like Darvocet inhibits adenosine, which is a neurotransmitter nucleotide required for initiating sleep leading to sleep disorders.
